5 common beginner mistakes on piano-synth (and how to avoid them)

When you start learning piano on a synthesizer, it’s easy to develop bad habits without realizing it. That’s normal: the instrument is light, versatile, and often packed with features that grab your attention. Here are the most common mistakes… and how to avoid them easily.

1. Switching too quickly to the “fun” synth sounds

Synthesizers offer dozens of sounds: violin, pad, organ, bass, effects… It’s tempting to try everything at once! The problem: you lose focus on actually learning the piano itself.

The right approach: start with the classic “piano” sound. Once your basics are solid, you can experiment with other sounds.

2. Playing without rhythm (or too fast)

Rhythm is one of the most important elements when learning piano, and also one of the most underestimated. Many beginners play too fast or stop every time they make a mistake.

The right approach: use a metronome (often built into the synthesizer) and start slowly. Speed will come naturally.

3. Trying to play with both hands too early

This is one of the most frustrating mistakes for beginners. Jumping straight to both hands creates tension and makes you feel “bad,” when in reality it’s simply too soon.

The right approach: first practice the right hand alone, then the left hand, and then slowly combine them.

4. Thinking the synthesizer replaces technique

The synthesizer can help you: light-up keys, learning modes, automatic accompaniments… But it does not replace solid piano fundamentals.

The right approach: use these features as a bonus, not as a shortcut. They should help you understand, not play in your place.

5. Not practicing regularly

With piano-synth, progress can be very fast… if you practice often. Playing only once a week is not enough to build proper reflexes.

The right approach: 5 minutes a day is enough. What matters is consistency, not duration.
